On Thursday, November 7th, our 7th grade students embarked on an educational field trip to Washburn Tech and the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library (TSCPL). The experience was designed to expose students to future academic and career paths as well as to foster a love of learning outside the classroom.
Students were split into two groups, with one group starting at Washburn Tech in the morning and the other beginning at TSCPL. They switched locations in the afternoon, giving each student the chance to experience both sites.
At Washburn Tech, students toured the campus and gained an overview of the various technical programs available to them in high school, including fields such as welding, automotive technology, culinary arts, and health sciences. This introduction to career and technical education gave students a hands-on look at possible career paths and practical skills they could pursue.
At TSCPL, students explored the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, which featured an exhibit on the history of photography, and received a guided tour of the library’s resources. They also got an exclusive look at the library’s new Young Adult section, slated to open in 2025, which promises to be a valuable resource for teens in the community.
Students took a break over the lunch hour to enjoy the beautiful fall weather at Gage Park for sack lunches, time to visit with friends and play volleyball, football or just take a walk.
This enriching day not only provided students with inspiration for their futures but also helped them connect with resources in the community that will support their growth and learning. We’re grateful for the partnerships with Washburn Tech and TSCPL that make these opportunities possible!
