November is National Native American Heritage Month. This observance celebrates the traditions, languages, heritage, stories, and culture of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives. During November, the vast achievements of America's original indigenous people are acknowledged.
At RVHS, the students in Mrs. Switzky’s Indigenous Literature class commemorated Indigenous People Month by making a bulletin board. The purpose of the display is to highlight movies, TV shows, books, and social media accounts created by various indigenous people.
One recommended TV show is Reservation Dogs, which can be streamed on Hulu. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer is a must-read book. Finally, someone to follow on social media is Shina Nova.
Panno Wahwassuck said “Since it’s Native American Heritage Month we wanted people to know more about who to follow, what to read, and what to watch. This project was brought to us by Mrs. Geis during one of our Indigenous Lit classes. She came in stating that she was going to do the board at first but thought of us to put something up instead. The class put a lot of passion toward this project and it was provided by everyone. We wanted to make sure it got done before parent teacher conferences so that the parents were able to see it too. We put a lot of hard work in and got the board done in two class periods.”
